Teaching Philosophy and Methods:

Emphasis is placed on familiarizing students with the concepts of the course material, readings, discussions, and exercises. Quality of participation is more important than quantity of participation.  The courses emphasize breadth of coverage rather than depth.  Students should think of the time allotted for each topic as a finite resource.  The courses are not designed to make you an theorist, but rather to support students in their quest to be more effective administrators, managers, and persons.  The teaching procedures used will include assignments, discussion questions, and website (link) review.

Course Criteria:

Class preparation is essential. To ensure a successful class, each student is expected to read all assigned materials and actively participate in each individual and group activity. Class participation includes: leadership, personality, and communication.  Each student is asked to lead a class discussion topic.
Students will be evaluated on the quality of their participation in class discussions and exercises. Quality contribution means that it is relevant to the course and expressed in an appropriate manner (e.g., not rude or insulting to anyone).  Students will be evaluated on the level of understanding of course material, the ability to apply that understanding demonstrated in the overall quality of their written work.
Focus of Courses:

Your effectiveness as a individual or leader is greatly influenced by how you communicate to and with people. This day of age, you must work with all types of people from many cultural backgrounds to generational differences.  The nature of each relationship you come in contact with is unique but in every case interpersonal communication is a critical factor.

The advantages of developing good interpersonal skills are enormous. If you can effectively manage your time, stress, and resolve conflicts you have a better chance of influencing people, gaining their support and motivating them towards goal achievement.

If you can give people clear instructions and information, they are better equipped for the tasks asked of them. On the other hand, many of the problems within our personal and professional life arise as a result of poor communication (either its absence, lack of clarity or misperception). If you are sensitive to the challenge of interpersonal communication, then this course can help you develop these exceptional skills
